                            History

Founded as the Iran Hebrew Congregation in the early 1900's by Jews immigrating from the Urmia and Eravon areas of Persia, the synagogue was originally located in Chicago on 12th and Troy Street. The congregation moved to its Skokie location in the 1950's. The 1970's and 1980's brought a new generation of immigrants, this time fleeing revolution in Iran, primarily from Shiraz. It was then that our congregation became known as the Persian Hebrew Congregation to better reflect the heritage of our founders. These founders took pride in their heritage while opening their doors and hearts to welcome all fellow Jews. We now enjoy a congregation that is unique in its customs and renowned for its warmth and hospitality.
